Berlin Philharmonie and Chamber Music Hall

Project: Philharmonie and Chamber Music Hall, Berlin, Germany
Architects: Hans Scharoun, Edgar Wisniewski
Acoustician: Lothar Cremer, TU Berlin

The musical heart of Berlin: The Berlin Philharmonie’s remarkable, tent-like architecture has made it one of the city's landmarks since 1963. Initially controversial, it now serves as an inspiration for concert halls all over the world.

Ahead of its time: In his pioneering concert hall concept, the architect Hans Scharoun, a proponent of organic modernism, was the first to position the stage with musicians at the centre of the hall, thus removing any separation between performers and audience.

Outstanding acoustics: The architect worked with the acoustics expert Lothar Cremer to solve the acoustic challenges. For example, sound-absorbing materials such as the seating played an important role. To optimise the reverberation time, the seats were fitted with rohi fabrics made from the finest virgin wool.
